In northern Nigeria, where Girl Rising partners with 1 Million Teachers, there are extreme barriers to education due to increasing violence and threats from Boko Haram which targets students and educators.
Girl Rising has been working in Nigeria since our earliest days, supporting the education of girls through innovative teacher training even in the face of violence and terrorism.
Over the past decade, Northern Nigeria has been terrorized by conflict and insurgency at the hands of armed bandits and religious extremists. The violence continues today, and COVID-19 has only exacerbated existing challenges in the humanitarian response in the region.
During this time, many teachers have been killed and millions of children have stayed at home, fearing for their lives if they attend school. Today, Nigeria has 10.5 million out of school children, the highest rate in the world.
Girl Rising has been working in Nigeria since our earliest days to support the education of girls. In 2021, Girl Rising partnered with 1 Million Teachers to deliver innovative gender response training to teachers, empowering them with the skills and knowledge to support girls during this time.
The Girl Rising training lives on the 1 Million Teachers online training portal, which provides teachers across sub-Saharan Africa with quality professional development and training materials. Since its September 2021 launch, over 10,000 educators have enrolled in the Girl Rising training course. You can access the course here.
